a MeSSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER
My name is Derrika Hunt and I founded Dreamers4Change Foundation as a home for all of my dreams. I’ve always been a dreamer. Even as a little girl my mother would chastise me for “daydreaming too much.” But my dreams and daydreams have been so important in helping me survive-- they have sustained me; so now I’m putting my daydreaming to use and channeling it to help me in my quest to change myself and maybe one day even change a small part of the world.
My life has really exceeded expectations. Never in a million years did I ever believe that I would grow up to travel the world, embark on the journey to completing my PhD and have so many fascinating, life-altering experiences. I didn't think I could ever do these things because I was just a little, poor, Black girl from a small urban town in Florida. At that time, I daydreamed to survive the hardships of growing up. But here I am, completing my PhD, and on a mission to continue my commitment to dreaming and supporting other youth in realizing their dreams.
My combined love for writing, travel and connecting with others have inspired me to start Dreamers4Change Foundation, Inc. With the help of my beautiful community, I have organized a series of projects: Passports4Change, The Sylvia Renee Memorial Scholarship and the Lemonade Workshop Series for Girls of Color. Each of these projects are connected to my vision of dreaming up the world as a place of love, freedom and possibility. Please explore each project to learn more about them and ways you can get involved!
Thank you for taking time out to visit our site. Will you join our movement? Come dream with us.
In love and solidarity,
Derrika Hunt, MSW
PASSPORTS FOR CHANGE
Passports4ChangeTM is a program built on the premise of cross-cultural exchange as a critical tool for learning. As our world continues to become increasingly global, the benefits of cross-cultural exchange are vast. The purpose of this program is to make cross-cultural exchange possible and accessible to youth who typically would not have access to traveling to a place beyond where they live.
LEMONADE WORKSHOP SERIES
The Lemonade Workshop Series is designed to serve self-identified girls of color in 7th - 12th grade. The workshop series covers a variety of topics ranging from healing, friendship, life experiences, surviving school, mapping your future, and so much more . Our primary purpose is to cultivate a space of joy, learning and imagination for girls of color while guiding them in the practice of building solidarity and community across difference.
